Quick Answer: The Hanafi answers we opened say Qurbani meat may be given to the poor and needy, Muslim or non-Muslim, and an IslamQA.info answer citing Ibn Qudamah (Hanbali) says there is nothing wrong with giving a share to a non-Muslim neighbour. One answer from the DUAI Fatwa Department (South Africa) says certain parts may not be given. We did not find a Shafi’i or Maliki answer we could open.

In many towns families live beside neighbours of other faiths, and Eid brings the question: may we send them some of the meat? Here is what each source says, side by side.

What the sources say

SourceWhat it says
TheMufti.com (Hanafi)The slaughterer may eat, keep some for the family and feed the poor and needy, Muslim or non-Muslim (citing Durar al-Hukkam).
Daruliftaa.com (Hanafi)The meat and skin may be given to any individual: poor, rich, a relative, a friend, Muslim or non-Muslim.
IslamQA.info (citing Ibn Qudamah, Hanbali)Nothing wrong with giving from the Udhiyah to a non-Muslim, especially a relative, neighbour or poor person; Quran 60:8 and the neighbour hadith are given as evidence.
DUAI Fatwa Department (Mufti M.T. Karaan)Not permissible to give certain parts to non-Muslims; allowed for parts Muslims are not inclined to eat, instead of throwing them away.

The Quran on kindness to those who did not fight you

Allah does not forbid you from dealing kindly and fairly with those who have neither fought nor driven you out of your homes. Surely Allah loves those who are fair.

Quran 60:8, translation as shown on quran.com

The IslamQA.info answer also quotes a report in Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi (1943) in which Abdullah ibn Amr asks whether a share was sent to the family’s Jewish neighbour, because the Prophet (ﷺ) said that Jibril kept urging kindness to neighbours; the answer says al-Albani graded it sahih. We read it as quoted on that page and did not open it separately.

What we could not find

We did not find a Shafi’i or Maliki answer on this we could open, so we do not state their view. If you follow one of those schools, ask your scholar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I give Qurbani meat to a non-Muslim neighbour?

The Hanafi answer on TheMufti.com says the person slaughtering may feed the poor and needy from the meat, Muslim or non-Muslim. The Daruliftaa.com answer says the meat can be given to anyone, whether poor, rich, a relative, a friend, Muslim or non-Muslim. IslamQA.info (a Hanbali-cited answer) says there is nothing wrong with it, especially for relatives, neighbours or the poor.

Is there a different view?

The DUAI Fatwa Department (Mufti M.T. Karaan) says it is not permissible to give certain parts of the slaughtered animal to non-Muslims, with an exception for parts that Muslims are not inclined to eat. The answer does not name the parts.

What about the skin?

See selling Qurbani meat or skin: the sources we opened say the skin and meat are not to be sold or used to pay the butcher.

Does the same apply to the Aqeeqah?

The SeekersGuidance (Hanafi) answer says it is permitted to share Aqiqah food with non-Muslim neighbours, and that it is recommended to eat from it, give some to neighbours and some in charity.

Does Qurbani Easy give my meat to non-Muslims?

The meat is 100% distributed to people in need; there is no home delivery. This guide is about meat you hold yourself. See where Qurbani meat goes.
