Quick Answer: Small Sadaqah counts. The Prophet (ﷺ) said to save yourself from the Fire even with half a date-fruit (Sahih al-Bukhari 1417), and Sahih Muslim 1009 lists everyday acts such as a good word and removing harm from the path as Sadaqa. This guide turns that into a habit you can keep: a fixed small amount, a fixed time, and simple acts for the days with no money to spare.

A daily habit works better than a large gift that comes once a year and is then forgotten. The hadith reports below give the basis; the habit tips after them are practical suggestions, not rulings.

What the hadith says

Save yourself from Hell-fire even by giving half a date-fruit in charity.

Narrated by Adi bin Hatim; Sahih al-Bukhari 1417

Sahih Muslim 1009 says that Sadaqa is due on every joint of a person every day the sun rises, and lists justice between two people, helping a man with his beast or luggage, a good word, every step towards prayer and removing harmful things from the path.

On every Muslim there is enjoined (a compulsory) Sadaqa (alms). They said, “If one has nothing?” He said, “He should work with his hands so that he may benefit himself and give in charity.” They said, “If he cannot work?” He said, “Then he should help the oppressed unhappy person.” … “Then he should enjoin what is good.” … “Then he should refrain from doing evil, for that will be considered for him as a Sadaqa.”

Narrated by Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari; Sahih al-Bukhari 6022 (shortened)

Building the habit

  • Fix a small amount you can give every day without strain, and keep it.
  • Fix a time: after the morning prayer or when you leave home.
  • Keep a box or a note so that the amount does not get spent.
  • Add acts that cost nothing: a kind word, a step to help someone, clearing something harmful from a path.
  • Review monthly and send the saved amount where it is needed.

Whether to give in secret or in the open is discussed in secret or open Sadaqah. For the types of Sadaqah, see types of Sadaqah.
