Hajj Badal (Proxy Hajj) | حجالبدل – A Gift of a Lifetime for Your Loved Ones

Grant your parents, grandparents, or cherished relatives the sacred opportunity to fulfill their Hajj obligation—even if they are physically unable to undertake the journey themselves. Through our Hajj Badal service, devout and knowledgeable individuals residing in the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah will perform Hajj on behalf of your loved one, in complete accordance with Islamic teachings and tradition.

🌙What is Hajj Badal (حجالبدل)?

Hajj Badal, also known as Proxy Hajj, Hajj e Badal (Urdu), or Badal Hajj, refers to the Islamic practice of performing the obligatory pilgrimage (Hajj) on behalf of another Muslim who is unable to perform it themselves due to permanent illness, old age, or because they have passed away.

“And Hajj to the House (Kaaba) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses.”
Surah Aali-Imran (3:97)

This verse highlights that Hajj is obligatory only upon those who have the physical and financial means. If a person had the financial means but was unable to perform Hajj due to valid reasons—and especially if they passed away without fulfilling it—the responsibility can still be fulfilled through Hajj Badal.

Ruling on Hajj Badal in Islam

The practice of Hajj Badal is permitted and recognized by all four major schools of Islamic jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali). It is a noble and rewarding act.

Key rulings:

  • Permissible for those who are permanently unable to perform Hajj due to old age, chronic illness, or death.
  • The proxy (wakil) must have already performed their own obligatory Hajj before performing Hajj Badal for someone else.
  • Hajj Badal can only be performed once per person (although some scholars in the Hanafischool allow multiple Hajj for deceased persons).
  • UmrahBadal (Proxy Umrah) can be done multiple times for different people.

Hadith Reference:
A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said:
“My father has died and he did not perform Hajj. Should I perform Hajj on his behalf?”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“Yes, perform Hajj on his behalf. Don’t you think that if your father had a debt, you would pay it off for him? Fulfill your father's debt to Allah, for He is more deserving of fulfillment.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 6699)

🕋Why Choose Hajj Badal for Your Loved One?

Many Muslims pass away without fulfilling this pillar of Islam, despite having the financial means. In other cases, elderly parents or chronically ill relatives express deep regret for being unable to go.

By arranging Hajj Badal for them, you:

  • Fulfill a sacred obligation on their behalf.
  • Provide a source of continuous reward (sadaqahjariyah).
  • Honor and uplift their spiritual legacy.
  • Support students of knowledge who perform the Hajj and continue to serve the Ummah.

"When a person dies, all their deeds come to an end except three: SadaqahJariyah, knowledge which is beneficial, or a righteous child who prays for them."
Sahih Muslim

📜Conditions for a Valid Hajj Badal

To ensure the Hajj Badal is accepted, the following conditions must be met:

  1. Eligibility of the Proxy:
    • Must be a sane, adult Muslim.
    • Must have already performed their own obligatory Hajj.
    • Should be trustworthy and knowledgeable about the rites of Hajj.
  2. Valid Intention (Niyyah):
    • The proxy must declare their intention clearly: "I am performing Hajj on behalf of [Name of the person]."
  3. Financial Provision:
    • The expenses for Hajj Badal must come from the estate of the deceased, or voluntarily by someone else on their behalf.
  4. Type of Hajj:
    • Hajj Badal can be performed as Hajj Tamattu’, Hajj Qiran, or Hajj Ifrad, depending on the situation.

📌Who Can Benefit from Hajj Badal?

Hajj Badal is allowed for:

  • Deceased Muslims who did not perform Hajj in their lifetime.
  • Elderly individuals who are permanently unable to travel.
  • Chronically ill individuals with no hope of recovery.

It is not allowed for those who are temporarily ill or could possibly perform Hajj in the future.
