Quick Answer: This glossary explains the terms you meet when reading about Qurbani, in plain words, with a link to the guide that gives the sources. It makes no ruling of its own: where schools differ, it shows the difference, and it points to the full guide.
Qurbani, Udhiyah, hissa, wakeel, niyyah: the same handful of words appears in every guide and every booking form. Keep this page open next to the longer guides if a term is unfamiliar. Terms are in alphabetical order.

- Wajib and Sunnah (for Qurbani)
- Schools classify Qurbani differently. In the Hanafi school it is wajib on one who owns the Nisab Darul Uloom Deoband, Fatwa 35/35/B=01/1437. The Shafi’i school treats it as a Sunnah for a Muslim who can afford it (Darul Iftaa Jordan) and the Hanbali school as a stressed Sunnah (HanbaliDisciples, citing Sharh al-Muntaha). For the Maliki school, please ask your own scholar. See also who Qurbani is due on.
- Wakeel, Wakalah
- A wakeel is an agent who acts for you; wakalah is the appointment. Booking Qurbani through an agent is covered in our guide to appointing a wakil for Qurbani.
