Quick Answer: The fatwa sources we checked accept appointing a trusted agent (wakil) to slaughter your Qurbani on your behalf. Darul Uloom Deoband (Hanafi) allows giving money to trusted people to slaughter “on your names”, Darul Iftaa Jordan (Shafi’i) allows paying a reliable charity, and a Hanbali source allows assigning someone. The Qurbani must still meet the usual rules for days, animal and distribution.
Many people ask whether it is correct to pay online and let someone else perform their Qurbani. This article does not give a new ruling. It lists what named fatwa sources say, shows where the schools differ or add conditions, and tells you what to check before you book with any organisation, including Qurbani Easy. Note on the Hanafi view: one Hanafi source also says that, as far as possible, people should do their own Qurbani, and that sending it elsewhere is permitted (Askimam, Mufti Muhammad Kadwa, checked by Mufti Ebrahim Desai). Note on the Hanbali view: the condition about being present when the animal is not specified beforehand may matter for an online booking, so a Hanbali follower should ask a scholar.
An Example from the Prophet’s Hajj Sacrifice
This example is from the sacrifice of Hajj (the Hady), which is a different occasion from the Eid ul Adha Qurbani. We cite it only to show that having part of a sacrifice completed by another person is found in the Prophet’s own practice. In the long narration of Jabir about the Hajj of the Prophet ﷺ, it is reported that he went to the place of sacrifice and sacrificed sixty-three (camels) with his own hand, then gave the remaining number to ‘Ali, who sacrificed them, and the Prophet ﷺ shared him in his sacrifice (Sahih Muslim 1218a). Qurbani Easy does not offer camel Qurbani; the camels here belong to the narration.
In a different matter, Urwa reports that the Prophet ﷺ gave him one dinar to buy a sheep for him (Sahih al-Bukhari 3642). This shows an agent buying an animal for someone, but the hadith does not say it was for Udhiyah, so we do not use it as a ruling on Qurbani.
What Can Make a Delegated Qurbani Go Wrong
- Your consent. A Hanafi fatwa says that a Qurbani done for you without your consent does not count as your Wajib Qurbani, even when a close relative did it with his own money (Muftionline, Mufti Ebrahim Salejee). When you book in your own name, this is your consent.
- Timing. A Darul Uloom Deoband fatwa warns that some banks or organisations carry out Qurbani when it suits them, even after the days of Qurbani, and advises caution (Fatwa 1397/954/L=11/1435). Ask any organisation when it will perform your Qurbani, and read about the permitted days in our guide Days and Time of Qurbani.
- Trust. The Deoband answer above is conditional: “if you trust” the people. Check who will perform the Qurbani, how the meat is distributed, and what proof you will receive.
- Names and intention. The Shafi’i source above expects the slaughterer to keep the list of names and mention the person’s name. Give your name and intention clearly when you book.
- The animal. The animal must meet the age and defect rules of your school. See Qurbani Animal Conditions: Age and Defects.
- Whether Qurbani is Wajib on you. This depends on your school and your wealth. See Who Is Eligible for Qurbani on Eid? and How to Calculate Nisab for Qurbani.
If You Live in Another City or Country
A Darul Uloom Deoband fatwa was asked by a man working in Saudi Arabia who wanted to do his Qurbani in India while Eid in Saudi Arabia falls one or two days earlier. The answer: first of all, offer your Qurbani in Saudi Arabia itself; if you want to offer it in India, do it on a day which is a Qurbani day in both countries, otherwise the Qurbani will not be valid (Fatwa 2097/1682=B/1429). If you live outside India, please ask a scholar of your school before you arrange a Qurbani in India. Qurbani Easy does not accept payment from outside India; a family member or relative in India can complete the booking and payment on your behalf.
How Qurbani Easy Handles a Booking
Qurbani Easy is a social-service initiative. You book goat or buffalo (including buffalo Hissa) in your own name, and a booking email gives you your reference number. The Qurbani is performed in India, and 100% of the meat goes to people in need; there is no home delivery. You receive a video, photographs or a completion update, depending on the option you choose, and a confirmation email when your Qurbani is completed. Once the moon is sighted and the date is confirmed, Qurbani Easy informs you of the date of your Qurbani. You can check your payment status: your booking email shows when payment is confirmed, and the booking page linked in it shows the current booking status; if your payment gets stuck, our team will contact you. Can I appoint someone if I live in a city and cannot go to an animal market?
The Hanafi fatwa above (1220/1316/N=1433) was asked by a person in Mumbai who found it hard to arrange many animals in the city, and it allows giving the money to trusted people who will slaughter on your names.
Is it better to slaughter my own animal?
The Hanbali source says it is preferred that you slaughter your own animal but permits assigning someone, and a Hanafi source says people should do their own Qurbani as far as possible while sending it elsewhere is permitted. Both are linked above.
What if the organisation performs the Qurbani late?
The permitted days differ slightly between schools (see our guide on days and time). The Deoband fatwa 1397/954/L=11/1435 quoted above warns that some organisations keep performing Qurbani even after the days of Qurbani and calls this a problem, so ask for the date before you book.
