Quick Answer: Quran 2:215 names parents and relatives first among those to spend on, followed by orphans, the poor and travellers. Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 658 says charity to a relative counts as two: charity and keeping family ties. Sahih al-Bukhari 1466 reports a double reward for Zainab spending on her husband and the orphans in her care. Which relatives may receive Zakat is a fiqh question, so ask your scholar.

People ask whether Sadaqah should begin at home. Here is what the Quran and the hadith reports we opened say, and where a fiqh question begins.

The Quran

They ask you (O Prophet in) what (way) they should donate. Say, “Whatever donations you give are for parents, relatives, orphans, the poor, and (needy) travellers. Whatever good you do is certainly well known to Allah.”

Quran 2:215, translation as shown on quran.com

The tafsir on that page also reports that a man said to the Prophet (ﷺ) he had a dinar, and was told to spend it on himself; with two, on his family; with three, on his servant; with four, on his parents; with five, on his relatives. We quote it as shown there and do not grade it.

The hadith

Charity given to the needy is (counted as) charity, and if it is given to relatives it is (counted as) two: charity and nurturing (the ties of kinship).

Reported by Salman bin Amir; Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 658; graded Sahih (Darussalam)

In Sahih al-Bukhari 1466, Zainab, the wife of Abdullah bin Mas‘ud, asked whether she could spend part of the Zakat on her husband and the orphans in her care; the Prophet (ﷺ) said yes, and that she would receive a double reward, one for helping relatives and the other for giving Zakat.

Where the fiqh begins

The reports show that giving to relatives is rewarded. For rulings on Zakat, such as which relatives may receive it, we did not open a fatwa for this guide, so we do not state one. The difference between Zakat, Fitrana and voluntary Sadaqah is set out in Sadaqah, Zakat and Fitrana compared.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should Sadaqah go to relatives first?

Quran 2:215 lists, among those to spend on: parents, relatives, orphans, the poor and needy travellers. Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 658 (Sahih per Darussalam) reports the Prophet (ﷺ) saying charity to the needy is charity, and to a relative it is two: charity and nurturing the ties of kinship.

Can Zakat be given to relatives?

In Sahih al-Bukhari 1466 Zainab asks whether she may spend Zakat on her husband and the orphans in her care, and the Prophet (ﷺ) says yes and that she will have a double reward, for helping relatives and for giving Zakat. Which relatives may receive Zakat is a fiqh question; ask your scholar.

Is the order in the Quran a ruling?

The Quran 2:215 verse is about whom to spend on; the tafsir on quran.com adds a report of the Prophet’s advice on spending on oneself, family, servant, parents and relatives. We read it as shown there and do not state a school ruling.

Does this replace giving to others?

No. The same verse also names orphans, the poor and travellers.
