Quick Answer: Sahih al-Bukhari 1902 reports that the Prophet (ﷺ) was the most generous of people and was more generous in Ramadan. The Shafi’i answer we opened says voluntary charity is recommended at all times, especially in Ramadan. Fitrana is a separate, enjoined payment. We did not open a source for particular days or nights.

Many people give more in Ramadan. This guide sets out what the sources we opened say, and keeps Fitrana and voluntary Sadaqah apart.

The Prophet’s example

The Prophet (ﷺ) was the most generous amongst the people, and he used to be more so in the month of Ramadan when Gabriel visited him, and Gabriel used to meet him on every night of Ramadan till the end of the month. The Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite the Holy Qur’an to Gabriel, and when Gabriel met him, he used to be more generous than a fast wind (which causes rain and welfare).

Narrated by Ibn Abbas; Sahih al-Bukhari 1902

What the fatwa source says

The Shafi’i answer from SeekersGuidance (via islamqa.org) quotes the Reliance of the Traveller: giving voluntary charity is recommended at all times, especially during Ramadan and at noble times and places. We did not open a Hanafi, Maliki or Hanbali answer on this specific point, so we do not state their wording.

Fitrana is different

Sahih al-Bukhari 1503 reports that the Prophet (ﷺ) enjoined Zakat al-Fitr, one Sa’ of dates or barley, on every Muslim and ordered that it be paid before people went out to the Eid prayer. For the difference between Fitrana, Zakat and voluntary Sadaqah, see Sadaqah, Zakat and Fitrana compared; for types of Sadaqah, see types of Sadaqah.

The sources we opened set no amount for voluntary Sadaqah; see small daily Sadaqah.
