After your Qurbani is performed, the next important step is meat distribution. Islamic teachings provide clear guidelines on how Qurbani meat should be divided. This guide explains everything you need to know.
The Sunnah Method: Three Equal Parts
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recommended dividing Qurbani meat into three portions:
- One-third for yourself and your family — You and your household eat from the meat as a blessing
- One-third for friends, neighbors, and relatives — Give to those you know, Muslim and non-Muslim alike
- One-third for the poor and needy — This is the most important portion; the primary purpose of Qurbani is to feed those who cannot afford meat
Can You Give Qurbani Meat to Non-Muslims?
Yes. It is perfectly permissible and encouraged to give Qurbani meat to non-Muslim neighbors, colleagues, and friends. This builds community relations and demonstrates the generosity of Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Be kind to your neighbor, whether he is Muslim or non-Muslim.”
Can You Sell Qurbani Meat?
No. It is forbidden (haram) to sell Qurbani meat, the skin, or any part of the sacrificed animal. The entire animal is a gift to Allah and must be consumed, given away, or preserved for later use — not sold for profit.
Can You Freeze Qurbani Meat?
Yes. If you have more meat than you can consume immediately, you can freeze it for later use. This is a practical necessity in modern times. The Prophet ﷺ allowed preserving Qurbani meat for future needs.
