A frequently asked question during Eid-ul-Adha season is: do I need to pay Zakat on my Qurbani animal? The answer depends on several factors related to Islamic finance rules. Let us clarify.
The Short Answer
No, you do not pay Zakat on the animal you intend to sacrifice for Qurbani. Animals raised or purchased specifically for Qurbani are not subject to Zakat because they are intended for worship (ibadah), not for trade or investment.
When Does Zakat Apply?
Zakat applies to Qurbani animals only in these specific scenarios:
- If you are a livestock farmer — Zakat is due on grazing livestock (camel, cattle, goat/sheep) that meet the nisab threshold and have been in your possession for one lunar year (haul).
- If you buy an animal for investment/trade — If you purchase animals with the intention of selling them for profit, they are treated as trade goods and Zakat applies based on their market value.
- If you receive cash for Qurbani services — If you run a Qurbani service platform, the income is subject to Zakat like any other wealth.
What About the Meat?
The meat of your Qurbani animal is NOT subject to Zakat. It is considered a charitable offering (qurban) that has already fulfilled its spiritual purpose. However, the meat should be distributed in three parts according to Sunnah:
- One-third for yourself and your family
- One-third for friends and neighbors
- One-third for the poor and needy
At Qurbani Easy, we follow a 100% zakat-compliant distribution model — all meat goes to the poor and needy, maximizing the charitable impact of your Qurbani. No meat is delivered to donors.
Can I Use Zakat Money to Buy a Qurbani Animal?
No. Zakat funds cannot be used to purchase a Qurbani animal for yourself. Zakat must be given directly to eligible recipients (the eight categories mentioned in Surah At-Tawbah 9:60). However, if someone is too poor to afford Qurbani, you can give them Zakat, and they can choose to use it for Qurbani if they wish.
Summary Table
- Animal for personal Qurbani: No Zakat
- Livestock for farming business: Zakat applies after nisab + haul
- Animals bought for resale: Zakat applies as trade goods
- Qurbani meat received: No Zakat
- Using Zakat to buy Qurbani: Not permitted for yourself
